I shall go back and check the year, but if memory serves me correct it was 94 or so; my dallas years are foggy to say the least. It could have been 95 as you mention.

Anyway, I know for a fact that it is not an urban legend since I was sitting at reunion Arena in Dallas ten rows stage left from page and watched the entire show. I recall having my eyes on plant and then a lead solo would began and naturally my eyes went to page's hands and they weren't the soloists hands. My eyes went down the stage and just off stage right stood the other guitarist (Porl Thompson formerly of the cure) playing lead. Believe me it took half the show and speaking with others to have it sink in, if it has even sunk in now.

I recall seeing articles in the guitar mags about the tour and page himself addressed it by saying he was a little out of playing shape. I will see if I can find any and shall let you know if I do.

via wikipedia: "Thompson left the Cure in 1993 to play with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin during the Page and Plant tour."

No worries; believe me I have questioned myself on it for years and only felt vindicated when I saw other reviews and/or spoke with people who saw the early shows.

I know as the tour progressed there was a change in Thompson's role; but night in Dallas (03-18-95) it was pretty strange having him playing barefoot in the dark as he did. I should note that page did have some great solos that night but they just seemed short and very guarded for what you would expected; and then you would hear this Porl Thompson just go off. Just didn't seem right; and I guess they figured that out as well. I have heard that the 98 tour was overall much stronger; I guess I need to find some tapes from that year.

I think it says a lot about page in that he stepped-it-up to be back at the top of his game, since he easily could have just coasted like more than a few end-up doing.

So I recall the material of the firm (unfortuntely) but what was the coverdale-page project like?

Porl Thompson (I think that's how you spell it) was in the Cure and was the guitarist for Plant's band, Strange Sensations, for a period of time - at least right around the turn of the century.

So, one can see how that rumor (?) got started....
